Coming back
"As a consequence, I came into the world very small but very tough" (1). This quote explains Le Ly's personaltiy and very being. She was born weighing only two pounds and her mother's midwife thought they should kill her to avoid her own misery. Her mother did not kill her and therefore FORESHADOWING Le Ly's strength in the story to come. We learn what Vietnam was like while dealing with war and what every day villagers had to go through. Le Ly's village was in the middle of the north and south, therefore causing villagers to have characteristics of both regions. Le Ly's family were not traitors to their country, but did not side with some of the Viet Minh's actions of publicly executions of the French. So who do they side with? that is how they lived their day to day lives in Le Ly's childhood.
