When Heaven and Earth Changed Places

CH. 5, Losing Love
"We must rediscover each other the way one climbs an old staircase-carefully, groping for footholds along the way. I see the light of compassion in his face, though his manner since coming  to his state-run hotel has been guarded. Pherhaps the Communist clerks make him nervous. Then again, maybe it's me" (157). Le Ly has just seen Anh for the first time in years. She has raised his son and he has many of the same features. Upon seeing Anh again, Le Ly noticed how the years have aged his face. Although he still has the same familiar look in his eyes. Le Ly goes on to say that she can only be grateful to Anh. He gave her son that she can now see as a blessing. Anh is Le Ly's ABSOLUTE "brother of my soul" (158). For me this means they are soul mates. They still have that spark for each other after all these years and there is no barrier of what to say or what to talk about. They came back to Le Ly's hotel and talked like they hadn't been apart.

This chapter reminds me of the movie the Notebook
Even the title Losing Love can be related because Noah and Allie break up. They do not see each other for years. Allie sees Noahs picture in the newspaper with a house he built. Their reunion reminds me of Le Ly and Anh's reunion because they both still have their spark. They have memories together and can reminise about them. They lost love, but in the end found what they had.

  1. I agree with you Megan, about her love for Anh, although I think it is a different kind of love. I think that Le Ly is very grateful, but sees Anh more as a brother. To her, Anh was a companion that she shared something special with. And after all the time that passed, when she sees him she still loves him, but maybe not in the same way. Anh was there for her, and although he bore her a son, their relationship was not that of a couple.
